Here we go again. The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, a single-player video game with no multiplayer modes or features, will for some reason require players to login into a PlayStation Network account on Steam when it arrives in April.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, a visually improved and expanded version of Naughty Dog’s award-winning PlayStation sequel, is the latest PlayStation exclusive to make the leap to PC. It joins other big PS4 and PS5 games like Ghosts of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and God of War, which have also received PC ports over the last few years. And like those recent ports, The Last of Us Part 2 on PC will require a PSN account and login to play.
As spotted by VGC on January 9, the Steam and Epic Store pages for The Last of Us Part 2 went live recently and both pages include confirmation that, yup, Sony is still forcing people to log in to a PSN account to play its latest PlayStation ports. Yes, even when the game is a single-player only adventure, like The?Last of Us Part 2.
You might remember that early last year, Sony faced a massive backlash from players when it announced plans to activate a PSN login requirement for Helldivers 2. The company eventually walked back its plans for the popular co-op shooter, but it’s not giving up on this weird PSN requirement for other games. The difference is that now these new PC ports make it very clear that you’ll need a PSN account to play.
And sure, making a free PSN account isn’t hard and logging in should be mostly painless and fast. But it’s still weird that Sony is making people do any of this to play single-player PlayStation ports on PC.
It’s also odd because for years Sony didn’t require this. You can go buy Miles Morales, Returnal, and Days Gone on Steam right now and you don’t need a PSN account to play any of them. Now, however, Sony wants PC gamers to join the PSN ecosystem, which isn’t necessary and could make it harder to play these games in the future without mods.
